House in Colares
The House in Colares is conceived as a weekend retreat embedded within the dramatic landscape of the Sintra–Cascais Natural Park, between Cabo da Roca and the Atlantic coast. The project responds to a monumental site shaped by cliffs, windmills, and a dense pine forest, treating architecture as a contemporary interpretation of a place of contemplation. The house is organised through a clear geometric order, inspired by the sacred Architecture of São Jeronimo's chapel in Lisbon, a central cross-like configuration structures the domestic life. A single main space is divided by light, fire, and material thresholds, balancing openness and introspection. Large framed openings capture the Atlantic horizon, while more enclosed areas preserve silence and privacy. Built as a monolithic volume of whitewashed masonry, the house explores the tension created by a single line design. It becomes a retreat for rare moments of inhabitation, where architecture is reduced to essential elements of space, light, and proportion.
